Oh the things you learn......

Getting into the sheep raising business can give you quite the education. Growing up in agriculture all my life you think I would be ready for all this stuff...dairy cattle SURE----pigs SURE...sheep..NOPE.

Well we had our first lambs...all went well, and all of the boys got banded, all the tails were done (granted the first few were a LITTLE LONG) and all the lambs brought a GREAT price at the livestock sale...

The ONLY downside....well, our Mr. Jello the ram wasn't letting us know WHEN he bred each girl (I guess he was shy)...so we ended up not knowing when these darn lambs were coming! So when lambs came in May....and then another in JUNE...we realized that we needed to put that boy in earlier!

So...here it is, mid-october and Jello went in...being the proactive people we TRY to be...we bought a breeding harness from Nasco...along with green, red and blue markers.

WELL...there are three different levels of markers...hard, medium and soft.....SOFT is defined to be used UNDER 55 degrees......WELL.....that is PERFECT..it is cold here so we were good....

So poor Jello was flipped over, while we both tried to figure out this crazy harness thing...after reading the directions....Jello was strapped in and we were very satisfied...what good sheep farmers we are!

So in goes the marker and TA DA! Now lets see what this boy does.....

So...the next day the high was 78, not even THINKING about the marker temp recommendations....I come home to THIS:

AND this...

I also come home to Jello the ram COVERED in green marker..many of the ewes have green on their heads....on their sides etc...which I KNOW is not from being bred! BUT....5166 SURE got bred!

Nasco is shipping us some hard and medium markers---should be here on Friday...

OH well....won't be ANY guessing who got bred!!!! We will be able to tell as will the entire town of Buckman, MN
